Short Summary
The patient sitter is a non-professional position that will enable us to provide constant surveillance to our psychiatric patients and those deemed unable to safely be left unattended.
His/her duties include, but are not limited to, constant and undistracted surveillance of the patient.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists with maintaining the safety of the patient by providing continuous attendance.
- The patient sitter is stationed at the patient’s bedside and remains at the bedside for the duration of the scheduled shift except for breaks as arranged with the charge nurse, and when the patient’s elimination needs are attended to by the nursing staff.
- Visually monitor the patient continually to maintain a safe environment for the patient. Provide only verbal support and reassurance to the patient to prevent the patient from hurting him or herself.
- Notify the nursing staff for assistance with the patient if needed either verbally or by utilizing the call light system. Notify nursing staff any time there is a need to leave the patient’s bedside. Ensure that nursing staff is in attendance with the patient before leaving the bedside for any reason.
- Report any change in the patient’s condition to the nursing staff upon discovery. Report pertinent information regarding the patient and the patient’s condition to the charge nurse or nursing staff at the end of the shift.
- Obtain and follows charge nurse/nursing personnel instructions pertinent to the care of each patient. Clarify any questions related to patient sitter responsibility with the charge nurse/nursing professional.
- Properly document any paperwork related to job duties as required.
- Must read, sign, and abide by the Sitter Guideline (attachment A)
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the mission and values of Insight Hospital and Medical Center.
Requirements
- Must be able to focus attention on the patient and patient’s activity and remain alert for extended periods.
- Must have good interpersonal skills to work well with people using tact and good judgment to obtain maximum cooperation.
- Ability to communicate with nursing staff as needed.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment and make decisions related to maintaining a safe environment for the patient.
- Must have current CPR certification.
- Must be able to work flexible hours as required to maintain a safe environment for the patients.
- Must be able to sit for long time periods and remain alert.
