Summary
The Tumor Registrar is responsible for performing various technical duties including coding and analysis of early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, stage of disease, initial and subsequent hospital treatment, recurrent and multiple primary concerns (abstracting) as documented in the medical record and obtain long-term follow-up.
Responsibilities
- Abstracts and codes clinical data using the standards set forth by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and the Cancer Report Law Section 33812 of the Florida Statutes.
- Reviews medical records with Tumor Registry eligibility criteria for data collection both in-patient and out-patient records.
- Prepares an individual abstract for all cases that meet the criteria for inclusion in the registry, containing the items in the required data set and insuring completeness, and accuracy for both the abstract and the coding.
- Analyzes health record following hospital policies, procedures and technical standards.
- Assist in data collection for patient care evaluation studies.
- Assist in data collection for inclusion of all eligible cases using sources such as (but not limited to): Health Information Management Department (HIM): Pathology and Cytology Departments; Oncology related ambulatory facilities that are part of the hospital and Staff Physician's office.
- Demonstrates ability to learn computer programs and maintain current in computer use.
- Maintains quality control of data processing procedure.
- Demonstrates ability to perform re-abstracting, re-coding, manual and computer edit checks in order to maintain quality of data processing procedures.
- Performs data abstraction by capturing a complete patient history, diagnosis, staging, and treatment information for all patients accessioned into the cancer registry by the American College of Surgeon Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC), the Florida Cancer Data System.
- Performs staging, which is a method of grouping cases with similar characteristics and which provides an indication of the prognosis as well as an abbreviated method of communicating information about the extent of disease using the approximately eight (8) staging systems that can be utilized to characterize malignancies, categories the stages under the required General Summary Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) classifications.
- Maintains at least a 90% follow-up rated of all living and deceased patients as required, and obtains the follow-up information in JMH physician's office and/or telephone calls, at all locations.
- Maintains the confidentiality and security of patient information in the tumor registry data base.
- Attends to the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board meetings and may assist with the preparation of Annual Report.
- Participates in educational activities of local, state and national tumor registrar's association, meets annual continuous educational requirements for re-certification.

- Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience
Generally requires 2 to 5 years of related experience.
Education
High school diploma is required.
Credentials
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certificate through National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) is preferred.
