Job Summary
Reporting directly to the President of the Faculty Practice Organization, the Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, Ambulatory Services provides oversight of medical operations for the UCSF Ambulatory Business Unit ensuring patients receive the highest quality clinical care. As a core member of the Ambulatory Business Unit Senior Executive Team, in partnership with the Ambulatory Chief Operating Officers, the Chief Financial Officer, the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, and other Health System Business partners such as the UCSF Health Chief Quality Officer, the CMO contributes to overall strategic planning for Ambulatory services. The CMO of Ambulatory Services is responsible for developing consistent roles and responsibilities for physician leaders (medical directors) across adult services and aligning these roles with the True North goals of UCSF Health which include quality and safety, patient and workforce experience, financial performance, growth, and evolution as a learning health system. Provides physician leadership for faculty practice(s) within the Ambulatory Business Unit and acts as a liaison between doctors and other healthcare executives. Implements safe, cost-effective, efficient medical interventions and ensures seamless medical care across all ambulatory sites, in partnership with other UCSF Health Business Unit CMOs and aligned with the vision of the UCSF Health System CMO. Develops and / or facilitates quality measurements for clinical programs; monitors and improves quality and safety metrics. Establishes and monitors compliance with regulations required by external regulatory agencies, state, and other accreditation bodies. Responsible for physician workforce planning and physician recruitment, evaluation and training. Assists faculty practices in resolving problems and questions of policy as they relate to the medical staff and patient care. Coordinates activities of the faculty practice medical staff, and assures compliance with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The salary range for this position is $345,200 - $750,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description
The UCSF Health ambulatory clinical enterprise consists of ambulatory operations focused on clinic visits with faculty practice providers (MDs and APPs) and the business unit includes outpatient surgery in ambulatory surgical centers, outpatient cancer infusion care, and outpatient pharmacy operations. There are over 300 unique ambulatory clinics in 5 different locations.
Required Qualifications
- 10 years of progressive management or leadership experience in an academic medical center or large healthcare system.
- Ability to handle the executive management responsibilities in ambulatory care delivery units.
- Expert knowledge of ambulatory health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development.
- Possesses a highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple medical center executives, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
- Expert ability to establish and utilize operational and quality metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration with an ability to drive results
- Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
- Advanced knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in sensitive situations that may involve public scrutiny.
- Highly advanced interpersonal skills. Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
- Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.
- Current California MD license (or commitment to obtain a California license within one year of employment).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in business, health administration or clinical degree preferred.
